ABOUT US

Home Is Where The Art Is is a non-profit formed to provide framed original artwork at no charge to people transitioning from homelessness or a shelter into their new homes. The organization supports people transitioning from a shelter or homelessness into new homes as well as other related charitable purposes.  Home Is Where The Art Is gives people transitioning into a house or apartment, who often have few personal belongings, the opportunity to choose free artwork from an online gallery of artwork. The original artwork, donated by local artists, brightens and personalizes their homes and provides a sense of control and ownership. The organization receives cash donations and donations of artwork, frames, and framing supplies from local artists, local frame shops, and members of the community. The organization partners with local housing nonprofits that provide services for clients facing homelessness. The organization encourages that donations be made to shelters.

The purpose of the organization is to support people in the Washington, DC region transitioning from a shelter or homelessness into new homes as well as other related charitable purposes.

Original Art:

It was important to me that all of the art be original and framed because I wanted it to be special and to look professional. Some of the first art that I received came from the art teachers at Centronía, a Spanish language immersion school in Washington, DC, and Wakefield High School near my house in Arlington. Then, many artists from the Arlington Artist’s Alliance donated art for the project. Pretty soon, neighbors, friends, and local frame stores also began donating frames and mats. Art and Frame Plus at Ballston and Fair Oaks was really generous in giving me materials and advice and some of the frame experts who work there even donated art.
